LIBIK® End-of-Life Kit (ELK)

This page provides handling and return instructions following a lithium-ion battery thermal event in a LIBIK equipped with a removable liner.

These instructions apply after the aircraft has landed and the incident has been stabilized. 

1. Post-Event Handling of Used LIBIK Liner

Authorized personnel only.

Before removal:

  • Allow 24 hours to ensure event has been neutralized.
  • Wear appropriate PPE in accordance with company protocol.

Removal:

  • Do NOT reopen the containment liner.
  • Do NOT disturb internal contents.
  • Remove the sealed inner liner as a single unit.
  • Set aside for placement into approved dangerous goods packaging.

The liner must remain sealed.

Damaged lithium-ion batteries may be regulated as dangerous goods and must not be placed into general waste.

2. Requesting an End-of-Life Kit (ELK)

Following a thermal event, submit an ELK request using the online form below.

Upon processing:

  • An invoice will be issued for the ELK.
  • The ELK will be shipped to the requesting location.

3. What the ELK Contains

Each ELK includes:

  • Approved outer return carton (This carton is reused for return shipment.)
  • Replacement LIBIK liner 
  • Replacement suppression pillows.
  • Return shipping documentation and labels.

4. Packaging the Used Liner for Return

Once the ELK is received:

  • Place the sealed used LIBIK liner directly into the supplied return carton.
  • Do NOT reopen the LIBIK liner.
  • Do NOT remove internal contents.
  • Close and secure the outer carton as instructed.
  • Apply the provided shipping documentation and labels.

Do not modify labels or markings.

Do not ship without required documentation.

5. Shipment

Shipment will be via UPS.

Follow the instructions included in the ELK for:

  • Label placement
  • Documentation inclusion
  • Drop-off procedures

Do not tender the shipment without required labeling and documentation applied.

6. United States and Canada

For customers located in the United States and Canada:

The ELK packaging system is manufactured in accordance with applicable regulatory approvals, including U.S. DOT Special Permit and applicable Canadian transport equivalency approvals.

All shipments must comply with current dangerous goods regulations.

7. Outside the United States and Canada

Dangerous goods requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Customers outside the U.S. and Canada must comply with applicable national and international regulations governing the transport of damaged lithium-ion batteries.

If the ELK packaging is not approved for your jurisdiction, consult your dangerous goods coordinator prior to shipment.

Important Handling Restrictions

  • Do NOT reopen the used liner.
  • Do NOT attempt to repack internal contents.
  • Do NOT place damaged batteries into standard shipping cartons.
  • Do NOT ship without approved packaging and proper documentation.
